The buds, seeds, and leaves also provide food for a long list of wildlife species. Armstrong: Grows in all 50 states, has attractive silver-gray bark, columnar in shape, spectacular red to orange to yellow leaf color. Silver Maple keys are very large and distinctively shaped. Silver Maple leaves are quite whitish underneath. It is native to eastern North America and is often found in flood plains, along streams or rivers, or low-lying woodlands. It gets its common name from the silvery undersides of its leaves. This can make them particularly attractive when the leaves are fluttering in the wind. Silver maple is a large shade tree in the Sapindaceae (soapberry) family. Note the deep notches of Silver Maple leaves Silver Maple leaves have contrasting colors with the upper side being a dark green while the underside being a silver-like color.
The notoriously weak wood of the Silver Maple means lots of fallen branches, but the often hollow trunks provide excellent dens and nesting cavities for many animals, such as owls, wood ducks, and raccoons! The leaves are easy to identify by the deep, narrow notches separating 5-7 lobes (usually only 5 on Sugar Maple leaves), and the pale white undersides. The Silver Maple requires a lot of space, but loves to grow in wetter areas, such as wooded areas near wetlands or streams. This fast-growing maple species is common throughout southern and central Ontario. Silver maple is a medium to large tree with a rounded crown and slender, spreading branches.
